Gift ideas for the novice homebrewer

I highly recommend the Papazian books for the novice. Some of the better starter kits include The Complete Joy of Homebrewing, so be sure to check the contents!

Logo revision

I’m currently revising my logo and hope to revamping my site soon. I’ll be doing away with the cgi script games.

My goal is slightly more professional appearance (read: something less lame).

We’re still alive!

Sorry that the updates haven’t come in a while boys and girls. The kids are finally getting settled in to the school year, so things are calming down here at the hacienda.

The BLTN brew from the last blog is bottled and should be ready within the next few weeks. After that it’s on to our winter brew. We still haven’t decided on what to make other than “something dark.” Looks like it will be an ale this time!

Cheers!

“Better Late Than Never” Märzen

In an attempt to spur on the fall season and to sate our thirst for a good Oktoberfest brew, we decided to experiment with a Märzen recipe this time around.

Traditionally, German Märzens were brewed at the end of the brewing season in March ( Märzen = March ) and lagered in caves or other cool environments over the summer and tapped in September/October. Since we missed the traditional brewing period, I picked the “Better Late Than Never” label. I can imagine that this style will still be fashion, at least for me, around the Christmas holiday season. At the rate that it’s bubbling, it may not be ready until next March… Maybe I could still get away with calling it a Märzen.

Beating the Unemployment Blues

After months of looking for work, unsuccessfully I might add, the search was taking its toll. Spending my days posting to job boards, phone interviews, and mailing out resumes without anything coming of it was allowing depression to take hold. I can’t stand feeling sorry for myself, so I had to find a way to fight it. A way that didn’t result in alcoholism or a lifetime of pharmaceutical dependency. Ladies and gentlemen, herein lies the method.

First I had to find out why I was letting it get to me. With some sacrifices, I knew we could make it financially. That wasn’t it. It wasn’t being stuck at home. I’ve worked out of the house for years.

Sayandra Hefeweisen

During the hot summer Texas summer months, a good hefe brew takes the edge off the 100 degree plus days. Since spring was crazy this year and my brewing partner and I didn’t get anything going, I’ve had to resort to commercial swill. The flavors take me back to the first hefe of last year. It was a darn tasty brew, even if the alcohol content was low, so I’d thought I’d share my notes. You’ll notice that I periodically switch between “I” and “we” throughout this blog. “I” usually refers to decisions I made during the prep work such as purchasing, equipment sanitation, etc. “We” refers to when my friend, usually M.W., and I are cooking, building equipment or bottling.
